Done Beats Perfect: How Shipping Flawed Work Actually Makes You a Better Maker
There's a half-finished project on your workbench right now. Maybe it's a CNC-routed cabinet with a slightly uneven dado joint. Maybe it's a 3D-printed enclosure that fits about 90% the way you wanted. Maybe it's a hand-sewn bag with a seam that makes you wince every time you look at it.
And it's been sitting there for three months.
Here's the uncomfortable truth most makers don't want to hear: that project isn't waiting to get better. It's waiting for you to let it go.
Perfectionism is one of the most seductive traps in the maker world. It disguises itself as high standards and craftsmanship. But underneath that respectable costume, it's usually just fear — fear of judgment, fear of failure, fear of being seen as someone who doesn't quite know what they're doing yet. The irony? The fastest path to actually knowing what you're doing runs straight through the messy, imperfect, sometimes embarrassing act of finishing things and putting them out into the world.
The Feedback Loop You Can't Fake
When Brooklyn-based woodworker and furniture maker Taryn Osei started selling her pieces on Etsy back in 2019, her first few items were, by her own admission, "rough around the edges." A floating shelf had a finish that wasn't quite level. A side table had a leg that was a millimeter shorter than the others — barely noticeable, but she noticed.
She shipped them anyway.
Within a few weeks, she had customer feedback she never would have gotten from another month of sanding in her apartment. People loved the rustic feel. They asked if she could replicate that slightly uneven grain pattern intentionally. One customer wanted a custom order. None of that learning was available to her while the shelves were still sitting in her living room.
"I learned more from those first twelve sales than I did from the two years I spent practicing before I listed anything," she says. "Real feedback from real people doing real things with your work — that's the education you can't buy."
This is the feedback loop that perfectionism cuts off. When you keep iterating in isolation, you're only getting feedback from one person: yourself. And you, frankly, are not the most reliable critic of your own work. You're too close to it. You know where every flaw lives. You're the only one who will ever notice most of them.
Good Enough Is a Skill, Not a Compromise
Let's be clear about something. "Shipping imperfect work" doesn't mean being careless or cutting corners on things that matter. A furniture maker shouldn't send out a structurally unsafe chair. An electronics hobbyist shouldn't distribute a circuit board with a known short. Safety and function are non-negotiable.
But aesthetic perfection? Absolute precision on details that don't affect performance? Those are different animals entirely.
Knowing when something is good enough to ship is actually a sophisticated skill — one that takes time and experience to develop. It requires you to separate the flaws that matter from the ones that don't. It demands that you understand your audience and your purpose well enough to ask: will this serve the person who uses it? Will it do what it's supposed to do?
If the answer is yes, you're done. Ship it.
The makers who build the most momentum aren't the ones obsessing over every surface. They're the ones who've trained themselves to reach "good enough" efficiently, extract the lessons, and move forward.
What Iteration Actually Looks Like
Here's a framework that a lot of productive makers — especially in the DIY electronics and rapid prototyping communities — use without even realizing it. They call it "version thinking."
Instead of trying to make one perfect object, they make Version 1 with the explicit understanding that Version 2 will be better. Version 1 isn't a failure. It's research.
The RepRap project — the open-source 3D printer community that essentially bootstrapped the desktop printing revolution — was built entirely on this philosophy. Early machines were noisy, slow, and finicky. Printed parts warped. Calibration was a nightmare. But makers shared those machines, documented their problems publicly, and iterated in the open. Within a few years, the community had collectively produced machines that commercial manufacturers couldn't touch at the price point.
None of that would have happened if the early contributors had waited until their designs were perfect before sharing.
Version thinking works for individual projects too. Build your first batch of custom leather wallets and sell them at your local maker market. Pay attention to what customers say, what they handle first, what they hesitate on. Build your second batch with those observations baked in. Repeat.
You'll learn more in three rounds of that cycle than you would in a year of solo refinement.
The Social Cost of Holding Back
There's another dimension to this that doesn't get talked about enough in maker spaces: the community cost of perfectionism.
When you keep your projects locked away until they're "ready," you're not just stunting your own growth. You're withholding something from the wider maker community. Your flawed, half-figured-out process might be exactly what someone else needs to see. Your honest documentation of what went wrong might save another maker six hours of frustration.
The most generous thing you can do in a maker community isn't to share your masterpiece. It's to share your process — including the ugly parts.
Post the failed print. Upload the Instructable that says "this didn't work the first time, here's what I changed." Show up to the swap meet with the thing you made that you're not totally proud of. Those contributions are often more valuable to the community than the polished wins, because they show the real texture of making things.
A Simple Test for When to Ship
If you're genuinely stuck trying to decide whether to release something or keep working on it, run it through these three questions:
Does it work? If the project does what it's supposed to do, that's a meaningful threshold. Function first.
Would fixing the remaining issues require starting over? If yes, ship it and start fresh with what you've learned. If no, spend another hour and then ship it anyway.
Is anyone waiting on this? If you've promised something to someone — a customer, a collaborator, your kid — the calculus shifts. Getting it to them matters more than getting it flawless.
If it works, if fixing it wouldn't require a full rebuild, and if someone is waiting — you already know the answer.
Make More, Make Better
The makers who do their best work over the long haul aren't the ones who made fewer things more carefully. They're the ones who made more things, absorbed more feedback, failed faster, and kept their creative momentum alive.
Perfection is a destination that keeps moving. Momentum is something you can actually feel.
So go finish that thing on your workbench. Ship it. Tell people what you'd do differently. Then start the next one.
That's how the best work gets made.
